Kraftwerk Formerly: Kr@ftAkt

100% love it
Gay food-and-drinks fixture of Munich life
A popular, confidant and rather large corner café-bar overlooking a hot spot in Munich's gay ghetto, Kraftwerk (formerly Kr@ftAkt) is something of an institution. 'Kraftwerk' means 'power station' in German, and Brazilian owner Fernando de Souza chose this very windowed and prominent space (and its name) to signify a kind of out and gay empowerment. Started in 2001 as a mediterranean-flavoured bistro, de Souza reinvented the business in 2011, now marked by a more subdued and designery feel. With its sense of an audience and hanging out, this is somewhat close to being Munich's equivalent of Berlin's Café Berio, but is a bit more high-definition-gay. Menu includes burgers, salads and pastas, with beers and espressos a staple of the gays, lesbians and their friends who sit around being chatty and comfy together both inside and out. The name change happened in January 2014, when the two gay owners of Café Rubin [see entry] took over from de Souza.
