Hotel Deutsche Eiche *

As gay and central as it gets
Partners Dietmar Holzapfel and Josef 'Sepp' Sattler abandoned their teaching and media professions to transform this breathtakingly central 1864 hotel, which they have continually modernised and upgraded since 1995. The hotel's name, meaning 'German Oak', probably derives from the founding of the Germain Reich in the early 1870s. With a restaurant/bar attached [see entry], and owing to the theatrical and red-light aspects of the Glockenbachviertel and Gärtnerplatz areas, the Eiche developed a following among artists, actors, gays and lesbians, starting in the 1950s. The bar (and bartender, so the story goes) of the Deutsche Eiche lured gay art-movie film-maker Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945–82) and his film crews in the 1970s and early 80s; they even filmed here. Fassbinder also lived just across the street. The restaurant was a magnet for scores of A-list creative personalities, but the scene changed, many moved on and many died from AIDS-related illnesses. Holzapfel and Sattler's vision included a sauna [see entry], which now attracts more than 100,000 men a year, ranks as perhaps the biggest in Bavaria and practically overshadows the hotel in signficance. But the Eiche remains a smart and reasonable hotel, with 36 sleekly designed and atmospherically lit rooms, all under the watchful eye of Sattler. In 2014 Dietmar and Sepp opened a new roof terrace bar, with fun and fabulous 360-degree views of Munich (apparently one of only three hotels with a rooftop view of central Munich). Food and drink are served here, weather permitting.

The hotel is very nice, clean & staff very friendly. The owner Joseph was very nice & very welcoming. The sauna is very nic÷, clean & lots of fun. The Lower level is a little confusing & u can lose ur sense of direction very easily but eventually we figured it out & it's part of the fun in this dungeon like theme. Highly recommended
