One of several great art museums in the Kunstareal (art district), this modern-thinking Pinakothek (art gallery) completes the picture started by the Alte and the Neue. Works include 20th- and 21st-century paintings (from Picasso, Braque and de Chirico to Warhol, de Kooning, Johns, Rauschenberg, Beuys, Twombly, Judd, Polke, Kippenberg and Hockney etc), architecture (from Balthasar Neumann to Le Corbusier), design (industrial, graphic and much more) and old and new works on paper (from Dürer, Rembrandt, Michelangelo and da Vinci ) to Cézanne, Matisse, Klee and Hockney). Plus photography, jewellery, installations and the rest. The building, opened in 2002, was designed by Stephan Braunfels.
